NEW Post Box Walks for 2025
Banks Battery & Buttermilk Point
Banks Battery & Buttermilk Point is a newly established Post Box Walk. Buttermilk Point
branches off from Banks Battery by approximately 400 meters, but both locations share the
same post box. The walk takes participants via a coastal route, providing views of the vast
ocean, plus a view of Banks Battery – a coastal fortification built by the East India Company. For
those seeking a longer hike, this route can be combined with the Flagstaff and Sugarloaf walk
into Jamestown. This walk is best suited for experienced walkers as there are steep inclines.
Sampson’s Battery & Saddle Battery
Walk the ridge that separates James Valley from Ruperts Valley and see the original cannons
that overlook Jamestown. These historic sites can be reached via a moderate ninety-minute
walk from Jamestown, stopping at the Mundens fortification along the way. A shorter version of
this route can also be taken for a more leisurely stroll.
Gill Point
A re-routed and re-developed Post Box walk with spectacular views of the runway where it is
evident that the airport’s construction is an outstanding feat of engineering. This walk heads to
the coast, is four hours long and is best suited to experienced walkers who enjoy cliff walking!
Mackintosh
One for more casual walkers, this easy forest walk is suited for families and those wanting a
less taxing wander through the lush, green scenery of St Helena. This circular walk is a distance
of 1.5km and takes around an hour to complete.
All St Helena’s Post Box Walks feature different aspects of the island’s rugged landscape,
walkers will really sense the untouched beauty of the island, giving that true feeling of being
completely off grid.
A selection of these walks feature small waterfalls, take hikers past bird populations, or end in
natural swimming pools. With some starting from sea level and others reaching up to 820m,
there are walks that fit everyone’s level of comfortability. Difficulty varies from family-friendly to
extremely challenging, distance varies from 1.5km-12km. All of the Post Box walks are Green
Flag accredited.
The Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards these well managed green spaces,
setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the
United Kingdom and around the world.

Notes to Editors
St Helena Island is one of the remotest islands on Earth. It is a subtropical paradise where the
mountainous terrain and microclimates create an astounding diversity of landscapes all within
a few minutes’ drive. The island is a breath of fresh air in today’s world, boasting clean air, a
sparkling ocean environment, a safe community (pop. 4,000) and a lack of reliance on modern
technology (mobile service was only introduced in 2015). It is an off-the-beaten-track, bucketlist destination that your friends will envy. Home to more than 500 plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, talking points include the island’s world-renowned diving and marine experiences and of course, Jonathan the Tortoise, the world’s oldest living land animal.
