St Vincent and The Grenadines Hurricane Update - 3 July 2024

St. Vincent and The Grenadines (SVG) was heavily impacted by the passage of Hurricane Beryl, which brought significant rainfall and heavy winds to the archipelago, damaging hundreds of homes and buildings on Monday, July 1, 2024. In an address to SVG, Prime Minister Dr. The Honorable Ralph Gonsalves said reports indicated that Union Island in particular has been devastated, with 90 percent of houses either severely damaged or destroyed. The Prime Minister noted similar levels of devastation are expected for the islands of Mayreau and Canouan.

Due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl, the Argyle International Airport (AIA) and the four airports in The Grenadines temporarily ceased operations. Resumption of service at AIA begins today, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, commencing at 8:00 AM for Humanitarian Operations and from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM for Commercial Operations. Regular operating hours will resume at the AIA from Thursday, July 4th, while the airports in Bequia, Canouan, and Union Island will remain closed until further notice. Travellers are strongly advised to contact their respective airlines directly to get the latest updates regarding their flights.

Recovery efforts in SVG commenced promptly after the catastrophic hurricane. Workers returned to work on July 2nd to initiate the reconstruction process. Utility and telecommunication companies have exerted considerable effort to swiftly restore complete services nationwide, following the disruptions.

Tourism officials have been in contact with accommodations throughout SVG and have been assured that all guests are safe.

Minister of Tourism Honorable Carlos James assures visitors that, as a resilient nation, St. Vincent and the Grenadines will recover from this devastation and look forward to welcoming visitors once again to our beautiful 32 islands and cays.
